[13:08:30] Joik is a special kind of singing from northern Scandinavia. It doesn't contain words. Instead, they "paint" an idea with sounds [13:09:39] Think of it like using paints to make a picture - anyone can see the the picture, no matter what language they speak. That's the idea with joik - sounds and emotions recreate a scene or an object [13:12:00] Probably the most famous modern one is Daniel's Joik by Jon Henrik Fjällgren. All you need to know is that his childhood friend named Daniel died and you understand the entire song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL9_INg9u-E [13:12:19] well duh thats just music in general [13:12:33] Using the throat as a keyboard or similar [13:12:39] The same idea is used in death metal [13:12:47] But of course the guitar is the primary instrument there [13:13:12] I suppose you could say that. Joik is a particular style. [13:13:30] Words are irrelevant to music, its the melody that counts [13:13:55] Not to all music [13:14:09] Some songs use words as poetry [13:14:21] I could sing complete nonsense but if its the same melody then its the same song [13:15:13] I get what you're saying but I can't fully agree with you. You can't take a Weird Al Yankovich song and claim it's the same as the original [13:15:33] The meaning is completely distorted (deliberately so) [13:18:08] But I don't think I described it clearly. It's not just that it's a piece of music. Someone sitting on a mountain seeing a spectacular sunset might spontaneously come up with a joik, and by singing, they say they are "joiking" that sunset, recreating it in song. As far as I know, that is unique to joik [13:18:49] In other cultures, you sing about something. [13:18:53] Thats all music, again [13:19:23] However I commend the joikers in attempting to use the actual sounds to create the vibe of an object or feeling [13:19:37] In this sense, again, it becomes very similar to death metal and black metal [13:19:51] Such a simple and intuitive idea yet somehow 99% of music misses it [13:20:36] Again, I disagree that this is true of all music [13:21:39] It's quite possible that certain types of metal attempt to do the same thing, I hadn't considered that [13:21:42] You would see I modified my statement a bit [13:22:39] As I said I consider "words" irrelevant, its the actual melodies and soundshaping that matter to me. So lyrics are meaningless, its the actual soundshaping that should sound like say a sunset. You can write lyrics about glaciers or whatever, but if it has a sunset melody thats the thing that matters principally. [13:23:35] Such soundshaping imo does not fit with the rigid staticity of rock much, something with a more "thematic structure" like black or death metal is more suited [13:23:59] ie fitting the structure to the theme rather than fitting the theme to a static structure [13:25:10] I think it lends itself especially to things that induce a strong emotional response [13:25:44] Naturally, elemental things like storms, death etc are a better fit [13:27:01] I do recommend Daniel's joik if you didn't click [13:27:33] bookmarked [13:28:00] Nice [13:56:33] #KSPOfficial: mode change '+o Judge_Dedd' by ChanServ!ChanServ@services.esper.net [14:01:55] !road [14:01:57] Althego => Primary; Nov 23, 2020; 9:00 am to 9:00 pm; Cancelled | Secondary; Nov 24, 2020; 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Cancelled | Secondary; Nov 25, 2020; 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Scheduled | Primary; Nov 30, 2020; 7:00 am to 6:00 pm; Scheduled | Secondary; Dec 1, 2020; 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Scheduled | Secondary; Dec 2, 2020; 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; Scheduled [14:02:00] cancelled [14:02:03] dont wait for it [14:02:28] when did that feature get added?
